The Tokens

If you remember the 50's, 60's and 70's you will remember The Tokens. Their name stands out among the rest of the great groups from that era. Their recording of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" enjoys a permanent place in Rock N' Roll's Hall of Fame. But, there is a lot more to this group than most people realize. The Tokens are one of the most versatile attractions on the circuit today. Their shows carry a wide variety of music going from ‘Doo-Wop' to Motown to all-time favorites from the 30's and 40's...this is truly one of the finest entertaining groups anywhere.

Let's go back to 1961. July to be exact. This was the magic year for them. They released their first record titled "Tonight I Fell In Love" and it reached all the Top Charts landing in the Top 20. In December of that same year they recorded a song called "Tonight"...it was released in early 1962 and went to #1 in the nation. It was one of only 6 recordings to be certified GOLD the entire year. In the years that followed they added more than a dozen Million Sellers to their credits. The most prominent being, "A Portrait Of My Love" which also achieved GOLD status.

These recordings were only a small part of what The Tokens contributed to the recording industry. They were the first group to use the falsetto voice successfully and were copied by artists such as The Beach Boys and The Four Seasons. They were the first group to produce themselves and the first to play all their own background music. Later they signed a production deal with Laurie Records and their first production went to #1..."He's So Fine" by the Chiffons. They followed with another smash recording titled "One Fine Day." Soon after they opened their own label, B.T. Puppy Records. They then produced The Happenings whose hits included "See You In September," "Go Away Little Girl" and "I Got Rhythm." In the 70's they were responsible for "Candida," "Knock Three Times" and "Tie A Yellow Ribbon (Round The Old Oak Tree) recorded by Tony Orlando and Dawn. They were the voices for Benson & Hedges (silly millimeter longer), Miss Clairol (she lets her hair down), Pan Am (makes the going great), General Foods (Great Shakes), Wrigley's Chewing Gum, Sunkist (good vibrations) and Wendy's.
