Beth and April Stevens released their first duo album, Sisters, in 1996. A rich, diverse record, Sisters cut across musical lines: bluegrass radio embraced Beths crackling banjo, Aprils bluesy vocals caught the ear of country stations, and Americana radio sent it into the top 10 of Gavins Americana Charts. More than four years after its release, Sisters is still making waves. Influential critic (and co-author of Finding Her Voice: The Saga of Women in Country Music) Robert K. Oermann rediscovered Sisters in 1999 and simply announced what thousands of fans of the bluegrass and old-time festival circuit have known for years: that Beth and April Stevens have the talent, roots, and passion it takes to make a mark on the musical map. Their impact is strengthened by varied influences and wide-ranging vision. In the crevices of the Stevens Sisters acoustic music are slivers of everything -- from driving bluegrass to smoldering R&B. Between them, Beth and April play most every stringed instrument, including guitar, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass, and banjo. Nowadays, the duos mighty instrumental chops draw almost as much attention as their soulful harmonies. Since branching out on their own in 1998, Beth and April continue to win fans. A rigorous touring and performance schedule - with a Bellamy Brothers tour and the prestigious Minnesota State Fair has tightened their already-sharp instrumental skills. And with a set list drawing on everything from traditional fiddle tunes like "Old Joe Clark" to contemporary classics like Steve Earles "My Old Friend the Blues" to invigorating original material, no one in the audience walks away unhappy! For good music, nothing beats Nashvilles legendary Grand Ole Opry. There, the Stevens Sisters have found a new home: making over two dozen appearances since the spring of 1999. Says Beth: "We had never been to the Grand Ole Opry before - not even in the audience. Youre a little bit scared. Youre really emotional!" "Youre standing on the circle that is made from a piece of the original Ryman Auditorium stage and youre thinking Why am I here? and you really get teary-eyed. That was my dream," admints April "Wed worked so long to get there." "Every time we play the Opry, we stay as long as we can! Its a thrill to be able to stand in the wings and see all your musical heroes. How lucky can you get?" adds Beth. "Beth and April Stevens play fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar brilliantly," praised the August 23, 1999 issue of Nashvilles Music Row magazine. "Those Dixie Chicks better be looking over their pretty shoulders, cause this East Tennesee bluegrass twosome cooks with hot sauce
. You gotta hear these women." |
