Joanie Sommers' career began at the age of 18. There have, indeed, been few "showbusiness beginnings" as impressive as hers. Virtually from the start, she headlined at the top nightclubs across the country, including New York's Copacabana, Los Angeles' Crescendo, Las Vegas' Sahara, Atlantic City's Tropicana and Golden Nugget Hotel/Casinos and the prestigious Los Angeles jazz spot, The Vine Street Bar and Grill. And there have been the hit recordings, Johnny Get Angry and One Boy, as well as ten successful albums for Warner Brothers, Columbia, Decca, and an acclaimed debut on Discovery. Sommers is one of the very few who proved to be as appealing in front of the television cameras as in the recording studio. She guested on programs hosted by Mike Douglas (Sommers was co-host), Dinah Shore, Bobby Vinton, Dean Martin, Johnny Carson and Bobby Darin. She also appeared on the Kraft Music Hall and co-hosted the Highlights of the Ice Capades. In the concert arena, she's shared the bill with Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Lou Rawls, Pat Cooper, John Davidson and Joe Williams, among many others. Her impact in the world of commercials has been unique. Two well-remembered campaigns for Pepsi-Cola - Come Alive! and For Those Who Think Young - were so memorable and triumphant for Pepsi, that Sommers was signed by the firm for their popular Now You See It, Now You Don't campaign - 20 years later! When DJs played those commercials, Sommers' voice was so identifiable that they were introduced as her spots. In fact, composer/conductor Andre Previn wanted to use her singing voice for Natalie Wood in the motion picture Inside Daisy Clover. Producers nixed the idea as they felt the movie illusion would be lost - everyone would have instantly known it was Joanie Sommers singing. Family life and a total dedication to marriage and raising three children temporarily halted her career - by choice. But she returned, with originality intact, coupled with a refreshing musical maturity that placed her in the ranks, as one critic put it, "of the top female vocalists in the nation." Rex Reed also agreed, saying, "She's even better than ever!" And Joanie Sommers' thoughts on her return? "I'm renewed, recharged and feeling anything and everything is possible." All that remains to be said can be heard. |
