Shangri-Las

Undoubtedly the "punkiest girl group of the sixties," The Shangri-Las were formed by four young women from Queens, NY. Due to the untimely death of one of the girls, they performed as a trio. The group gained local fame with their imitation of then current hits.

In 1964, The Shangri-Las came to the attention of producer George "Shadow" Morton, who arranged for a contract with the newly formed Red Bird label. Morton wrote and produced "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" a record that quickly established the group by climbing to the National Top Five. He next employed the writing services of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry to supply a follow up. Greenwich and Barry provided several girl-group hits for Phil Spector and Lesley Gore. Their contribution was "Leader Of The Pack", an instant classic that went straight to number one.

After several additional hits like: "Give Him A Great Big Kiss," "Out In The Streets," "I Can Never Go Home Anymore," etc., the Red Bird label folded.
