Dickey Lee

As Memphis was opening the doors of Rock N' Roll to the world, Dickey Lee began his career in music. He signed his first recording contract with Tampa Records and released his first Pop Single in 1957. Promoted by Disc Jockey Dewey Phillips, (who is credited with breaking Elvis) "Dream Boy" was an instant local smash. It stayed at the number two slot on the biggest Rock N' Roll station in Memphis for eleven weeks. Understandably, it was held from the number one position by Elvis, and his hit single "Teddy Bear".

With "Dream Boy", Dickey had caught the attention of every Memphis Rocker, including Elvis. After a show one night Dickey was surprised to be told that Elvis had seen his show and wanted to meet him. Lee was escorted to a side street where Elvis was safely concealed in his car. "I was shocked — he was telling me he liked what I was doing, encouraged me to continue and invited me to Graceland." Dickey and Elvis became friends and in 1963 Dickey wrote a song that became one of Elvis' favorites — "She Thinks I Still Care". Over the years Elvis told Dickey how much he loved the song and that he'd record it one day. The years passed and he kept his promise. Elvis recorded Dickey's tune on one of his last sessions and it reached the number one position after his death.

Dickey had also caught the attention of the hottest record producer in Memphis. Sam Phillips signed Lee to legendary Sun Records while Dickey was still attending Memphis State University. A few years later, in 1961 he signed with Smash Records. Lee's first release became a number one National Pop Hit and Million Seller! "Patches" put him on the Rock N' roll Circuit with the Beach Boys, Fabian, Bobby Vinton, Tommy Roe and Freddy Cannon. His second release, "I Saw Linda Yesterday" (Written by Lee) also rocketed to the top of the Pop Charts. In 1965 he signed with Twentieth Century Fox and scored two more Pop Hits, "Laurie" and "The Girl From Peyton Place" (the latter also written by Lee).

Equally as successful in Country Music, Dickey signed with RCA Records in 1971 and recorded as one of that label's top country artists for ten years. He could be heard on the airwaves with crossover hits such as "9,999,999 Tears", "Rocky" and "Never Ending Song of Love", all of which reached the top slot on the National Charts.

A hit songwriter as well as a hit artist, Dickey Lee has penned such country favorites as "You're The First Time I've Thought About Leaving" (number one for Reba McEntire), "Let's Fall To Pieces Together" (number one fore George Strait), and "I've Been Around Enough To Know" (number one for John Schneider), and, as mentioned before, Dickey wrote "She Thinks I Still Care", now a country standard (number one for Elvis, George Jones and Anne Murray)!

The Dickey Lee Sound is still strong and clear. His hits are delivered to his fans exactly as they remember them from the fifties for his voice has not changed a bit. Lee adds to his show excitement, stage presence and crowd awareness that can only be mastered by thirty years in the business. He has entertained audiences in every state of the United States, Europe, Canada and New Zealand. Lee has received countless awards as both an artist and songwriter.

Today, Dickey can be found entertaining both Rock N' Roll and Country fans. He molds his shows around the audience, many of whom have followed him throughout his changing career. If it's Rock N' Roll they want, Lee gives them a fast paced show packed with his and other smash hits from the fifties and sixties. He is performing on Rock N' Roll Revival Shows with top acts including The Shirrells, The Diamonds, Bobby Vee, Tommy Roe, Bryan Hyland and Dick and Dee Dee. However, Lee has discovered that many of his fans won't let him leave the stage without hearing his country hits. Prepared, his show then has a strong fifties rock base with an accent of country crossover which proves to be a perfect combination! Dickey also has a complete songlist of his country hits, with a show he performs on the famouns "Grand Ole Opry" and in countless country markets worldwide.
