Ladies of the '80s

  Juice Newton

Passion, movement, energy, these are all hallmarks of Juice Newton's musical performance. They're also the elements that drive the forces in her life: Her family, her music, and...horses.

It's no secret to Juice Newton fans, that Juice has always been an avid rider. When she took her first horse ride, she decided that this was for her. She was equally decisive about her music. It was a passion she devoted herself to as a teenager, sneaking out at night to work in the clubs that would give her an opportunity to express herself the best way she knew how, by singing.

Unlike riders who take to the open spaces, follow trails or ride just for the fun of it, Juice chose a tough equestrian path - jumping fences, racing against the clock, as well as scoring points on the polo field. She has chosen the same path with her music. Riding her talent to the top of the charts, over hurdles, keeping her direction while playing by others' rules. It hasn't always been easy, but it has always been challenging and rewarding.

"I got into music for the immense sense of personal joy I received from putting a thought or emotion across to people. It's how I communicate best, most comfortably," said Juice when asked about what keeps her going in an ever-changing business. "I've had my share of rewards, in the sense of awards and honors, which are great, and I'd like to have more, but the rewards I get personally from the music itself are the reason I can fly or drive to a new town every night, get on stage, and love what I'm doing."

It is very evident on stage that Juice loves what she's doing. The Grammy Award winner is always in motion, displaying physical dynamics seldom seen in other performers. Juice credits her enthusiastic performances to the philosophy of owing your audience more than just going through the motions," I go out there wanting to have a good time and making sure the audience does too".

Juice Newton, through her pop and country hits, her distinctive voice and entertaining performance skills, continues to captivate audiences from teens to grandparents, from the city to the country. As a music critic stated, "Newton remains one of the most riveting performers in music, rocking on stage and playing each emotion for what it's worth. And it's worth a lot."

  Janie Fricke

Janie Fricke has gone from Indiana farm girl to internationally acclaimed recording artist during her career. She was born in South Whitley, Indiana, and raised on a 400-acre farm where her father taught her how to play guitar.

From county fairs to corporate trade shows, live concerts, in recording studios, or before millions on television, Fricke's individual sound and performance personality has captivated audiences around the world.

Fricke began her career singing in a "little church up the road" where her mother played piano. She sang at local coffeehouses, high school events and through college where she obtained her degree in elementary education. Fricke then chose a full-time musical career, working in Memphis, Dallas and Los Angeles. There, as one of the marketing industry's most successful jingle singers, her voice became known to millions as the voice for such advertising giants as United Airlines, Coca-Cola, 7-Up, and Red Lobster.

Her voice has led to singing sessions for Country artists such as Loretta Lynn, Eddie Rabbit, Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Barbara Mandrell, Mel Tillis, Johnny Duncan and others. She has also been privileged to sing on albums for Charlie Rich and Elvis Presley, before and after their deaths, which was a difficult task since she was so close to both.

It was a line in Johnny Duncan's single "Stranger" that ultimately gained the most attention for Fricke. When it hit the top of the charts in 1977, fans wanted to know who sang the line, "Shut out the light and lead me..."

The music industry took notice as her voice was heard on duets with Merle Haggard, Moe Bandy and others, leading to her first major recording contract. Fricke soon began to dominate the country charts with smash hits such as Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby, He's A Heartache and Your Heart's Not In It. It was only a matter of time before she started winning awards. Included among them are: Country Music Association's Female Vocalist of the Year, Music City News Female Vocalist of the Year, "Billboard" Top Country Female Vocalist, "Cash Box" Top Country Female Vocalist, Academy of Country Music Female Vocalist of the Year, British-based Country Music Round Up Most Popular International Female Solo Act, and she was chosen to the Country Music Hall of Fame Walkway of Stars. Twice she has been nominated for the coveted Grammy Award, once for her It Ain't East Being Easy. In her recording career, Janie has released 23 albums and 36 hit singles.

But stardom hasn't conflicted with Janie's strong Midwestern values. When relaxing, she spends time with family and her horses on a ranch in Texas. She attends church near home, remembering from childhood the importance of her confirmation. Thankful for her blessings, Janie feels these values have helped her become the woman she is today.

From Indiana farm girl to internationally acclaimed recording artist, she has never lost the pure heart and love of music that launched her career. And today, Janie Fricke sings on!

  Lacy J. Dalton

She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music - the woman People magazine called "Country's Bonnie Raitt." From the first time Lacy J. Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, was a mainstay of country music. When you sit down to listen to Lacy, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a set, she's bringing each and every tune of life. It's as if they were all especially written for her.

Lacy J. Dalton's music is a product of her wide-ranging musical tastes. She was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, into a family of music lovers. Her father played a variety of stringed instruments, sang and wrote songs. Her mother played guitar and sang harmony, and her sister was a pianist. Lacy's early influences were the folk and rock sounds of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. She's always been a writer and artist who loved music with a message, lyrics that somehow brought a new awareness to the listener. She retains this love of material with a purpose, and her song choices reflect that appreciation.

Since 1980, Lacy has recorded a total of fourteen albums which include three "greatest hits" packages. Nine albums were recorded for CBS Records and Lacy released her fifth album for Liberty Records called "The Best of Lacy J Dalton" in April of 1993. Most of Lacy's early albums were produced by Billy Sherril (George Jones, Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, etc). Her last four albums have been co-produced by Lacy and Liberty Records president Jimmy Brown (George Strait, Reba McEntyre, Hank Williams Jr., Glen Campbell, etc.).

Lacy has had many hit singles including "Crazy Blue Eyes", "Hillbilly Girl With The Blues", "Takin' It Easy", "16th Avenue", Dream Baby", "The Heart", and more recently "Black Coffee". Lacy has received gold records from Willie Nelson for her duet with Willie on his "Half Nelson" album (she was the only female to appear on this record) and from Hank Williams, Jr. for her support of his tour commemorating his fiftieth album ("Five-0")

Lacy has been nominated for Best Female Vocalist several times throughout her career and in 1979 won the Academy of Country Music's Best New Female Vocalist award. Her songs have been nominated for Grammy Awards and she has numerous BMI awards for airplay. She also won Best Country Performer from the Bay Area Music Awards in California three years in a row.

Lacy feels she has earned accolades by choosing top-flight material from Nashville's finest songwriters. She goes to great lengths to insure that her songs are not just flash-in-the-pan hits but classic songs that will wear well year after year. She also has produced a flexible stage show that allows her to work in all manner of settings from County Fairs to opening for Charlie Daniels and Hank Williams, Jr., and headlining at the prestigious Harrahs Casinos.

For many years Lacy has enjoyed great popularity and an extremely positive relationship with not only the media, but with her fans as well. She is an innovative and creative artist with a great deal of real-life experience and an earthy honesty which she brings to her work. The name Lacy J. Dalton is synonymous with quality, originality, and integrity.
