Frankie Ford sang his way to rock n roll immortality via the mega hit, Sea Cruise on Ace Records in 1959. The record has since become one of the biggest selling rock n roll records of all time; many millions have been sold all over the world.
His second million seller was You talk too much which was a cover of the Joe Jones record: ironically, Frankies version outsold the Jones version due to record company problems that Joe Jones was involved with. Other hits include Alimony, Time After Time, Let Them Talk, Seventeen, Blue Monday, and the list goes on. Frankie Ford was born August 4, 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has lived most of his life in the New Orleans suburb of Gretna. He was only 17 when he recorded his first single, Cheatin Woman, which was a regional hit. His record, Sea Cruise, would catapult Frankie Ford into the international spotlight it would etch his name into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock n Roll says, ... a record which stands today as the finest example of pure, romping, stomping New Orleans rock ever made Frankie Fords Sea Cruise. John Gabree, a noted feature writer, wrote, ... Frankie Fords Sea Cruise retains more vitality than most records being released right now. Sea Cruise, when played at full volume, is a surprisingly intense evocation of sexual yearning. His recording career continued into the 80s with his New Orleans Dynamo album being recorded in London, where it was produced by veteran Mike Vernon. The album was released in Canada, Great Britain, Europe and Scandinavia. Whiskey Heaven was pulled from the LP for release in Canada and the U.S. where it became very popular. He appeared in the Paramount movie, American Hot Wax where he played himself and performed Sea Cruise. In personal appearances all over the world he has played in some of the great venues including Royal Albert Hall in London, Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood and with some of the biggest stars of the 50s & 60s. The Canadian film, My American Cousin, used Frankies Sea Cruise throughout the movie. Nominated for 11 Genie awards, the movie won 6. (A Genie is the Canadian equivalent of an Academy Award Oscar.) Billboard Magazine has called Frankie Ford a legendary rock n roll pianist, which is evident at his concerts and night club engagements. Frankie tours regularly all over the United States and Canada as well as in Europe, Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries. He has become a headliner all over the world with his wild New Orleans style piano playing! |
